Years later, Stark's experiences during the alien invasion of New York are giving him panic attacks. Restless, he has built several dozen Iron Man suits, creating friction with his girlfriend Pepper Potts. A string of bombings by terrorist the Mandarin has left intelligence agencies bewildered by a lack of forensic evidence. When Stark Industries security chief Happy Hogan is badly injured in one such attack, Stark overcomes his stupor and issues a televised threat to the Mandarin, who responds by destroying Stark's home with helicopter gunships. Hansen, who came to warn Stark, survives the attack along with Potts. Stark escapes in an Iron Man suit, which his artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. pilots to rural Tennessee, following a flight plan from Stark's investigation into the Mandarin. Stark's experimental armor lacks sufficient power to return to California, and the world believes him dead.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is an ordinary teenager who lives in Staten Island, New York City. Dave purchases a bodysuit and, after making modifications, embarks on a campaign to become a real-life superhero. The first of his crime-fighting encounters leads him to getting stabbed and accidentally getting run over in a hit and run, leaving him with permanent nerve damage and requiring extensive rehabilitation.
However, he gains an enhanced capacity to endure pain and enhanced durability. His effort to conceal the truth leads to rumors that he is gay. His longtime crush, Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca), immediately attempts to become his friend. After intervening in a gang attack, Dave's actions are recorded by a bystander and put on the internet, turning him into a celebrity. Calling himself "Kick-Ass", he sets up a Myspace account so he can be contacted for help. After responding to a request from Katie, he deals with a drug dealer, Rasul (Kofi Natei), who has been harassing her. Rasul and his thugs quickly overpower him, but he is rescued by eleven-year-old vigilante Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), who kills Rasul first, and then kills all of Rasul's thugs and leaves with her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage).

In New South Wales, Roz and her husband Harold and their son Tom live near the beach, and widow Lil and her son Ian too, nearby. Roz and Lil are best friends, and young adults Tom and Ian too. Harold applies for a job in Sydney without telling Roz, and gets it. He expects Roz to move to Sydney with him, but she hesitates. She is irritated, and as a result responsive to start a sexual relationship with Ian initiated by him. Tom discovers this and takes revenge by initiating a sexual relationship with Lil. Now Roz has even more reason to stay, and later Roz and Harold divorce. Tom marries a woman of his own age. Supposedly his sexual relationship with Lil ends here, and Roz decides, out of solidarity but to Ian's regret, to stop their sexual relationship too. Ian has a relationship with a woman of his own age, but is not happy with it. He plans to break up, but he does not after hearing from her that she is pregnant. Later he finds out that Tom and Lil have resumed their sexual relationship. He is so angry that he discloses to the two young women what has been going on. They are so shocked that they break up with the men, with Ian telling his girlfriend that the break-up is final. Ian reconciles with Tom and the mothers, and presumably resumes having sex with Roz.

The planet Krypton faces imminent destruction due to its unstable core, the result of years of depleting Krypton's natural resources. The ruling council is deposed by the planet's military commander General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his followers during a military coup. Scientist Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife Lara (Zurer) launch their newborn son Kal-El (Henry Cavill) on a spacecraft to Earth after infusing his cells with a genetic codex of the entire Kryptonian race. After Zod murders Jor-El, he and his followers are captured and banished to the Phantom Zone. However, Krypton explodes some time afterward, freeing them.

The story begins in a flashback in which a man holding an item wrapped in cloth is running away from another man. The man digs a hole by a tree and buries a medallion. The movie flashes back to the present where Billy (Billy Unger) sneaks into his father's archaeology site and tries to help work. He is told to leave, so he goes swimming with his best friend Allie (Sammi Hanratty). When he goes back home, she gives him an old book. Billy is not a reader, so they read it together. They hear how the medallion was buried in a different spot than where his dad is looking. They go into the forest with Billy's home-made metal detector go searching. Two men from a rival archeology company have been watching them and bring their own metal detectors. The kids stumble on the goons and head off in a different direction. They hide behind a large tree. The detector goes off and they dig up the medallion.
